When to call a specialist to find a leak

The signs where waiting turns expensive, and what to prepare so the inspection is quick and accurate.

Some water problems are solved in half an hour with your own hands. Others look exactly the same but cost thousands of leva if left. The difference is not the size of the patch — it is whether the water comes from something you can see, or from something built into the fabric.

You can handle these yourself

  • A dripping tap or shower mixer.
  • A leaking cistern, where a seal is replaced.
  • A loose connection under the sink, in plain view.
  • Old silicone around the bath, due for replacement.

Call a specialist when

  • The meter moves with the taps closed. Something is leaking and nothing is visible — that is the definition of a hidden leak.
  • A patch returns after a repair. The symptom was repaired, not the cause.
  • The neighbour below reports damp while your side is dry. Water travels and surfaces far from its source.
  • The heating loses pressure and needs topping up regularly.
  • A smell of mould that returns after cleaning.
  • You are buying a property. A freshly painted wall hides everything, and the deal is irreversible.
  • The water bill has risen with no change in habits — especially in a house with a garden, where the external run is entirely invisible.

Mould begins to develop in under 48 hours of constant damp. That is why “we will look at it in the spring” is an expensive decision.

What to prepare before the visit

  • The history of the problem — when it began, after what, where it appears, whether there has been recent work.
  • Heating switched on 2–3 hours in advance, if underfloor or central heating is suspected.
  • Dry wet rooms — do not wet the bathroom for 2 hours before the inspection.
  • Access to the neighbours, if the patch is at their end.
  • No breaking open beforehand. Broken screed complicates the measurement.

What you need not do

Do not buy materials in advance. Diagnosis is a separate service from the repair: first it is established exactly what is damaged and where, and only then does it become clear what is needed. Buying blind beforehand almost always means wasted expense.

How long it takes

For a flat, a house or an office — between 40 minutes and 2 hours, according to the area, the number of wet rooms and the complexity of the installation. For production halls, schools and warehouses the time is set individually.
